In May, a powerful tornado tore through Laurel County, leaving destruction in its path and deeply impacting the lives of many – including members of the Baptist Health family. But in the aftermath of the storm, something remarkable happened: communities in southeastern Kentucky rose up together in support and solidarity.

Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of donors, $39,214 was raised to assist Baptist Health team members who experienced personal loss and hardship. These funds provided vital, immediate relief, offering not just financial assistance, but comfort and hope to those who found themselves in crisis.

At the same time, Baptist Health Corbin acted swiftly to support the broader community, especially families moving into FEMA temporary housing. Alongside local partners, the hospital helped meet urgent needs by distributing essential supplies – including bottled water, toiletries and bedding – through generous donations.

But the response didn’t stop with physical needs.

Recognizing the emotional toll of such a traumatic event, Baptist Health Corbin’s Behavioral Health team stepped forward with free, walk-up emotional support. Without the need for appointments or referrals, survivors could access a safe space to process grief, stress and anxiety during an incredibly vulnerable time.

In a moment of crisis, these efforts reaffirmed what makes small communities so strong: neighbors looking out for neighbors, and compassion showing up in tangible, powerful ways.

“An insurance company wasn't at my former home trying to meet my immediate needs – instead, it was my family, friends, and coworkers,” an employee from the Baptist Health Corbin Cath Lab said. “Small town people have caring hearts. I have cried more tears over the goodness of God's people than I have over my losses.”

Another employee, from Baptist Health Medical Group Somerset Cardiology, shared a similarly heartfelt message: “I can't say thank you enough. Honestly, there are no words to describe. I don't even know where to start. Look for miracles and [you] really get to see them.”

These heartfelt expressions of gratitude are a testament to the power of community and the impact of every donation, every kind word, and every act of service.

From all of us at Baptist Health: thank you for being part of the healing. Your compassion made a real and lasting difference in the lives of our team members and the communities we serve.

“Small town people have caring hearts. I have cried more tears over the goodness of God's people than I have over my losses.”
