For John Serak IV, MD, it was either finessing his beverage brewing hobby into a full-time gig or trying to get into medical school for the second time. He chose the challenge and was accepted into Indiana University School of Medicine (known for a 5% acceptance rate).

Dr. Serak is not one willing to give up before leaving his mark. Trading in the science behind a good brew for the science of medicine, John persisted through medical school and chose one of the most prestigious, selective fields of medicine — neurosurgery. He trained at the biggest spine center in the U.S., University of Miami Jackson Memorial Hospital GME, then took his skills to Denver after graduation. What happened next is common — a baby on the way and the accompanying desire to be closer to his roots.

“The Midwest draws you back,” says Dr. Serak who practiced a total of four years in Denver. Originally from Indiana, he and his wife wanted to be closer to family once baby Errol was born. Dr. Serak searched for jobs in the region and Kentuckiana topped his list.

He chose Baptist Health Floyd because they supported his needs to implement a world-class program with investment in a Globus spine surgery robot. Dr. Serak, who was trained on and accustomed to robotic surgery, wanted the same safety and efficiency for his patients no matter where he lived.

“Baptist was supportive of the technology that I wanted to bring to the hospital,” said Dr. Serak. This less invasive technology increases accuracy when placing screws and rods in the spine. “The robot helps decrease time in the hospital and gets patients back to living life sooner.”

Dr. Serak’s story proves what attracts top doctors and helps patients — advancements and training. He believes the new Baptist Health Foundation Floyd can support both.

With a dedicated foundation just for the local hospital, physicians and surgeons like Dr. Serak can get what they need for patients faster and better.

Dr. Serak, with the hospital for three years now, recently joined the President’s Circle, a donor society at Baptist Health Floyd. “I love the hospital and the community,” said Dr. Serak. “I hope to set an example for other physicians and other donors. Being a part of the origin of anything is special and an opportunity you get once.”
