Because of you, a little boy named Lew never had to leave his parents’ side during the fight for his life.

When Kelsi Wright went into labor four weeks early, nothing could have prepared her for the news that came next. Her newborn son had Down syndrome, and was struggling with double pneumonia.

In that moment, Kelsi and her husband were overwhelmed with fear. They didn’t know what the next hours would bring. But thanks to donors, their hospital had a fully equipped NICU ready to provide the critical, specialized care Lew needed.

“The fact that they had a NICU was huge,” Kelsi said. “Otherwise, Lew would have needed to be transferred. That, on top of everything else, would have been totally detrimental to my already fragile mental health.”

The generosity of donors meant Lew could stay right where he belonged – in his own community, in a room just steps from his parents. Instead of facing the added trauma of being separated from their newborn, the Wrights could be present for every moment of his care, holding his tiny hand and speaking words of comfort as he fought to get stronger.

It also meant that when Kelsi faced the hardest days of her life, she was surrounded by compassionate nurses, expert physicians, and a network of support that carried her through.

“I don’t know how I would have done it without the staff and NICU being there,” she said. “It was the hardest part of my life, and they made it so much more bearable than it would have been otherwise.”

That’s the power of giving – providing not just advanced medical technology, but hope. It gave a southern Indiana family peace of mind, and baby Lew a fighting chance at a healthy life.

“I don’t know how I would have done it without the staff and NICU being there. It was the hardest part of my life, and they made it so much more bearable than it would have been otherwise.”
