How you’ve helped to make children safer

The Broselow Cart at Baptist Health Hardin

When you are experiencing a medical emergency, quick action and effective treatment are essential, especially when it comes to our smallest patients. Thanks to WHAS Crusade for Children, Baptist Health Hardin has recently purchased a new piece of equipment – the Broselow Cart.

The Broselow Cart will be used by emergency department professionals to have quick access to properly sized medical supplies and dosage instructions for children up to approximately 12 years of age. Height and weight measurements of the patient provide a color code which matches the color drawer on the cart containing the medical supplies suitable for them. The addition of this equipment will help to cut down on the time it takes to begin patient care and to improve medical outcomes.

“Through philanthropic support which allowed us to purchase the Broselow Cart, lives have been saved,” said Deanna Parker, assistant vice president of emergency services at Baptist Health Hardin. “Most recently, it was integral in the care and resuscitation of a young boy that was brought to the emergency department in full arrest, requiring life-saving measures.  The team was able to utilize the cart and successfully resuscitate this little boy.  This tool is critical to success in care for pediatric emergencies and will make a tremendous impact on our ability to serve the children of this community.”

Access to resuscitation equipment is a critical component in delivering optimal care in emergent pediatric situations. The organizational component of the Broselow erases the outdated system of storing multiple sizes of the same instrument in each drawer of a resuscitation cart which often required multiple drawers to be opened during situations that required urgent action.

“The care and resuscitation of a child requires accurate and rapid measure of the child’s weight to provide dosing of life saving drugs. The color-coded system will allow healthcare providers to act quickly and accurately, to provide the right dose of those lifesaving drugs; therefore, preventing mathematical and dosing errors during chaotic situations.”
