Your dollars at work: NICO BrainPath®

The NICO BrainPath

Deep-seated brain tumors and blood clots have long been beyond the reach of neurosurgeons because they risked damaging the parts of your brain that control speech, memory and vision. Thanks to your support, Baptist Health Louisville neurosurgeons now have access to a new piece of equipment — the NICO BrainPath®.

The NICO BrainPath enables a neurosurgeon to safely move between the natural folds of the brain without cutting or damaging anything else in its path, giving patients with once-inoperable brain abnormalities more surgical options.

“Baptist Health Louisville is always looking for ways to better serve our patients and ensure that we are providing the highest level of care possible to anyone seeking medical treatment,” said Steven Reiss, MD, neurosurgeon at Baptist Health Louisville. “This revolutionary technology not only allows safer, more innovative approaches to neurosurgery, it allows Baptist Health Louisville to remain at the forefront of healthcare by offering groundbreaking technology that gives our patients a better chance at survival.”

The addition of this equipment allows the neurosurgeon to map the exact location of the tumor or blood clot by combining the device with precision imaging, global positioning technology, and high-definition fiber optics. Then, through an opening no larger than a dime, the neurosurgeon can successfully remove the clot or tumor from the deepest recesses of the brain.

Whether patients are dealing with tumors or trauma of the brain, our specialists and staff can help them to live a better, healthier life and achieve the best treatment outcomes — all because of the generosity of people like you.
