Tiny beginnings, powerful impact in the Louisville NICU

When Susie House welcomed her daughter Maci into the world three weeks early, she never imagined spending the first 22 days of motherhood in the NICU at Baptist Health Louisville. 

Maci, born at just 5.2 pounds, struggled with low blood sugar, jaundice and feeding challenges. The first few hours of her life were especially difficult, as she needed constant monitoring and support. 

Susie, who had managed diabetes during her pregnancy, was overwhelmed. 

“This wasn’t part of the plan, and it was scary,” she shared. “We were fortunate to have a room available with two recliners so we could have somewhere to sit and sleep. I just could not leave my baby, and it was amazing to be able to stay there with her.” 

During those long days – sometimes 12, even 17 hours – the NICU team’s strength and compassion helped the House family through. 

“If it weren’t for the staff, I wouldn’t have kept it together like I did,” Susie said. “They supported us from the moment we went in. They saw me cry more than I care to admit.” 

At the heart of this journey is the quiet, yet powerful impact of donor generosity. Because of gifts to Baptist Health Foundation, the NICU at Baptist Health Louisville – now a level three NICU – has been able to grow in space and resources to provide life-saving care and comfort to families just like the Houses. Today, Maci is 15 months old and thriving – full of life and growing stronger every day. 

“I can’t say anything more than thank you,” Susie said. “It matters so much. It is so appreciated. I can’t imagine not being with my baby right after birth. I am so appreciative.”
