A tangible reminder of kindness and empathy

Marilyn Raider's journey through her own cancer care ignited a passionate mission to ensure that others facing similar challenges would feel supported and comforted. Recognizing the often lonely and unsettling experience of undergoing treatment, Marilyn took action. Drawing on her social media community, she rallied support to provide cancer care bags for patients at Baptist Health Richmond.

What started with a heartfelt plea resulted in an outpouring of generosity. Over the past four years, Marilyn has coordinated the distribution of more than 230 care bags. Each bag is meticulously curated to provide practical and emotional support to patients on their first visit for treatment. From essentials like tissues, hand lotion and snacks to thoughtful items such as a blanket, devotional book and crossword puzzle, every detail is designed to bring comfort and alleviate some of the challenges that cancer patients face.

“Patients deeply appreciate this initiative not just for the added comfort it provides during their challenging journey, but also for the heartfelt acknowledgement that others are actively thinking of them and taking steps to ease their path,” said Vickie Frisby, Nurse Navigator at the Robert L. Telford Cancer Center at Baptist Health Richmond.

Marilyn's motivation stems from her own journey and a deep empathy cultivated over decades working in healthcare administration. Her understanding of the healthcare environment, gained through over 40 years of service, gives her a unique perspective on the needs of patients and the power of compassion in healing.

Above all, Marilyn finds immense satisfaction in knowing that these small gestures—from the personal notes to the practical items—convey a message of care and solidarity. For her, the greatest reward is seeing patients feel acknowledged and supported, knowing that they are not alone in their fight against cancer.

Through Marilyn Raider's initiative and the generosity of her community, the comfort care bags serve as tangible reminders that kindness and empathy can make a world of difference in someone's toughest moments.
